Passage 1
Working English translation
The moment one enters, one is already captured, subdued, shackled completely by the element of thunder, movement, and light. The air thunders and groans ecstatically. The iron soul of the factory pierces the crowd. The breast hums with a metallic tremor. In the buildings a heavy bustle begins. And everything grows heavier, louder. The buildings will burst, split apart. They are about to tear themselves from their foundations, explode. A catastrophe will break out; fountains of molten metal will burst from the earth. Well then, let it thunder! We are ready! We are outside; we are already different. The crowd proceeds in a new march; its feet have caught the iron tempo. Their hands burn; they cannot remain idle and cannot wait without a hammer, without work. Currents of energy must be discharged. Strike! Strike! Faster, more often! Cut, saw! To the machines! We are their lever, their breath, their design. A thousand workers, an immeasurable expanse of machines. A song! An iron one! One, unified! Faster still, wheels, rush on! Stone, metal, workers—all are mixed together in the whirlwind.
The passage celebrates and dramatizes the factory's power, but depicts workers as captured, shackled, and absorbed into its mechanical rhythm: they become the machines' lever, breath, and design. The predicted explosion introduces a clear image of technological catastrophe. Its ecstatic tone makes restriction an implicit consideration rather than an explicit policy recommendation.
