Passage 1
Working English translation
The machine emerged and became its fellow worker, caretaker, and overseer; and mechanization itself, prompted not by humanity but by economic instinct, now regards as imperfect an enterprise that demands mindless labour. The loss of muscular exertion must be countered by the second nature of voluntary physical exercise; education for the young and abundant leisure are intended to acquire and preserve strength of mind and capacity for responsibility. In this direction we see economic tendencies moving in technologically advanced countries; nowhere is there a return to patriarchal and slave-like relations; but a later period will elevate the demand for the increasing spiritualization and responsibility of work into a moral principle, and would rather forgo products of labour than receive them from the hands of human machines.
Rathenau presents mechanization as transforming the machine into a worker, caretaker, and overseer while reducing the need for bodily labour. He argues that exercise, education, leisure, and increasingly responsible work can preserve human strength of mind and responsibility. The passage favors refusing goods produced by dehumanized ‘human machines,’ but treats mechanization’s effects as potentially redeemable through human development rather than simply rejecting all machinery.
